Miserachs Barcelona

‘The complexity and seductiveness of a living city.’ That is how Josep Maria Espinàs summed up the gentle everyday scenes which Xavier Miserachs had chosen for Barcelona, blanc i negre (published by Aymà in 1964). This book, a joint production by MACBA and RM Verlag, offers a new approximation to Xavier Miserachs’ most ambitious work, suggested by the curator Horacio Fernández, and features 68 of the 371 photographs included in the original publication.

Drawing inspiration from the work of William Klein and Francesc Català-Roca, Miserachs documented the day and night-time life in the city’s neighbourhoods. He captured families strolling, children in the streets, flea markets, workers leaving factories and migrants’ luggage at the railway station. This photobook is presented to mark the exhibition Miserachs Barcelona at the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) from 18 September 2015 to 27 March 2016.
