Learning to imagine oneself. On pedagogies and emancipation

Included in Pedagogies and Emancipation, a section of MACBA’s Independent Studies Programme, this seminar focuses on the role of pedagogy as a stimulus driving the poetic imagination to activate processes of individual and collective emancipation. As part of the current debate on the necessary renewal of schools and the introduction of new practices, we will discuss the concept of innovation and its subjection to the neoliberal emphasis on effort, efficiency and productivity.

The seminar is divided into three simultaneous workshops taking place on 14, 15 and 16 November. Participants will include PEI students, museum and social educators, and primary and secondary school teachers. These are practical workshops dealing with questions such as writing as a form of poetic elaboration in the classroom, with valeria flores; working with the body and the image, with María Berrios; and the reactivation of memory from the contributions of Ivan Illich, with Sofía Olascoaga.

The international seminar will take place on 17 and 18 November. Besides those already mentioned, the participants include Marina Garcés, Pablo Martínez, Collectif Micro-sillons, Pili Álvarez, Mercedes Álvarez Espáriz, Janna Graham. A round-table discussion, chaired by Jordi Solé, will include the testimonies of people who are directly involved in the current state of schools in Catalonia.

PARTICIPANTS
Pili Álvarez is an educator, artist and filmmaker. She studied Fine Art and trained as documentary director at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV (EICTV), San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. She currently teaches cinematography in various cinema schools and is a member of the education department of CA2M.

Mercedes Álvarez Espáriz is an educator, researcher and cultural administrator. She holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication and trained as a photographer in schools such as ArCo (Lisbon) and Blank Paper (Madrid). She has recently conducted research on artistic processes in schools for institutions such as CA2M and MNCARS.

María Berríos is a sociologist, editor, art critic and independent curator. She has developed her work as an independent researcher in the field of contemporary art and culture in Chile and other Latin American countries. She lives and works between Santiago de Chile and London.

Jaume Carbonell was director of the journal Cuadernos de Pedagogía from its foundation in 1975. He currently lectures in Sociology of Education at the Faculty of Education of the Universitat de Vic, Barcelona. His research focuses on educational innovation, public schools, teaching and the future of education.

Concha Fernández Martorell teaches philosophy. She was director of the IES Mediterrània del Masnou for many years. She currently teaches at the IES Menéndez y Pelayo, Barcelona. She is the author of various essays on contemporary philosophy. In 2008 she published El aula desierta. La experiencia educativa en el contexto de la economía global (ed. Montesinos).

valeria flores. Lesbian, masculine and feminist: this is how valeria flores describes herself. A primary school teacher in Neuquén (Argentinean Patagonia), she regards the classroom as a teaching space but also a space for political activism.

Janna Graham is a researcher, educator and curator. She was a member of the Ultra-Red collective and Micropolitics Research Group, among others. She is currently project curator at the Serpentine Gallery, London, where she initiated the programme ‘The Centre for Possible Studies’.

Collectif Micro-sillons. Founded in 2005 by Marianne Guarino-Huet and Olivier Desvoignes, their work questions the forms of education and mediation in art and the role of the artist in society.

Sofía Olascoaga works in the intersection between art and education through the activation of spaces that promote critical thought and collective action. Her research focuses on a critical evaluation of the tension between utopia and the failure of models attempting to create communities in Mexico in the last decades.

Jordi Solé is a Doctor in Pedagogy, social educator and writer. His field of research focuses on pedagogic thought, the anthropology of education and youth, and the training of social educators.
