Guest Researchers Programme
The guest researchers programme of the MACBA Study and Documentation Centre (CED) was set up in 2009 to support and promote the study and critical analysis of contemporary artistic practices.
The programme guarantees the availability of an individual or group study space, access to MACBA Library and Archive resources and support from its staff members. Guest researchers can also take advantage of an in-house document lending service, obtain a Friends of MACBA card free of charge and present their project to CED staff and other researchers.
The MACBA Study and Documentation Centre also offers residencies for people conducting their professional activity at other archives and libraries in order to share experiences and knowledge on the processes and methodologies related to the management of documentary heritage.
Residencies
This research support programme is aimed at academic researchers, artists and other people specialising in contemporary artistic practices.
An individual residence involves the right to use a physical space located in the Centre’s Bibliographic Holdings, equipped with a personal computer, Internet access, office software and access to the Study Centre’s databases, catalogues and other resources, including assistance from Library staff.
The allocation of these places is granted for periods of between 1 and 3 months and these may be prolonged up to a maximum of 6 months under exceptional circumstances.
Terms and conditions of the research support programme for individuals
The research support programme for guest groups offers a group meeting and study space for research teams. All groups specialising in contemporary art and culture that are developing a research project related to these fields in contemporary art and culture can apply for this type of residency. Groups will have the chance to stage a public activity related to the subject of their research during their residency.
Residency periods will have a maximum duration of 10 months and places will be allocated to a maximum of 3 groups within this period.
Terms and conditions of the research support programme for groups
You must send the documentation listed to the following email address in order to apply for an individual or group residency place: psi [at] macba [dot] cat.
- Letter of presentation that includes the proposed dates to start and end the residency period.
- Description of project to be developed, specifying the importance of the resources held in the Study and Documentation Centre for the project (maximum 3,000 characters).
- Academic and professional CV.
Reference letters or reports issued by artistic or academic institutions supporting the applicant will also be taken into account.
Applicant candidates will receive a reply within a maximum of 90 days from the date of receiving their application.

Residency Period: 2020
An investigation into what happens in the folded forms generated when we exceed the normal limits. We seek to immerse ourselves in the flow of the archive by thinking about other corporalities, bodies that are not contained, open and bulging, that go beyond themselves, liberating their silhouettes and overflowing onto other organisms and materialities, while, at the same time, exploring those excited artistic practices that search for ways of escaping disciplinary boundaries.
Ours is a personal and particular reading of the archive through which, liberated from any specific corpus, we reach out toward artistic practices that are wet, porous, spongy, permeable, surpassing all categories, promoting the emergence of new ways of connecting and interrelating. A pleasant, intuitive process that arises from the enjoyment of inhabiting and conversing with the archive, and where caressing it and getting excited is the way to approach and explore it.
We understand the archive as a planted field or fermented magma, latencies where one can be exposed to the outbreak, contagion, discovery and multiple forms of encounter with the other, while engaging with the people who inhabit the archive: those responsible for the care and permanence of these latencies, and those who are currently researching and discovering how exciting it can be to caress them.

Residency Period: 2020
The three researchers behind the project ‘Visualising pain: visual narratives of disease and transmedia storytelling’ are conducting a study of the role played by various artists in the creation and critique of the collective imaginary elaborated through the mass media and their role in the creation of alternative visual narratives, based on the MACBA Archive and Library. Their research focuses on the processes of construction and deconstruction of the stigmatising iconography of certain diseases in contemporary visual arts and will carry out an exhaustive bibliographic review on the subject, as well as a review of the documentary and film material in the Archive. To begin with their case studies will analyse how artistic experimentation and creative research interact with the theoretical and conceptual framework of the fields of medical humanities and health communication in which the project is situated.
Training residencies for professionals
The MACBA Study and Documentation Centre (CED) offers 3 unpaid residencies per year of between 5 and 10 working days in order to promote its work processes and methodologies, the functioning of its services and the development of its activities. The goal of these residencies is to foster ongoing training, improve professional skills, exchange knowledge and encourage collaboration with professionals working in libraries, archives, documentation centres, museums and institutions related to contemporary art.
