Since the early seventies, North American artist Gary Hill (Santa Mónica, California, 1951) has carried out his work at the intersection of two fields: visual arts (performance and sculpture) and writing (literature and philosophy). Gary Hill trains his gaze on reality and appearances, being and language. A substantial part of his audiovisual productions are an attempt to come up with an image of silence. In the three installations that were presented at MACBA, Withershins (1995), HanD HearD (1995-1996) and Midnight Crossing (1997), Hill broadened his project on the deconstruction/reconstruction of the ideas and images of Western culture. Isolating each spectator in the exhibition space, he engaged the public physically and intellectually in the creation of the meaning of the work.
