Fragments. Proposta per a una col·lecció de fotografia contemporània

As the photography of the past 25 to 30 years lacks both unity and stylistic congruence, coordinating an exhibition on ‘contemporary photography' can only be done in a very fragmentary manner. Perhaps the sole unifying characteristic of their historiography is the varied confrontations with the crisis of representation. In 1996 the MACBA accommodated parts of Rafael Tous' private collection of photography–begun in 1971 completely subjectively, according to the collector–. The idea behind the exhibition was to show the dilemmas that contemporary photography confronts when depicting images of violence, feminine identity, the use of the body, etc. The catalogue includes reflections by some of the artists included in the show, as well as two general essays–Gloria Picazo and Juan Vicente Aliaga–about contemporary photography.
