The Library's collection is the result of bringing together material from the collection of the Alexandre Cirici Documentation Centre (created in 1984 under the auspices of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia) and from the MACBA library, which was opened in 1995. The product of this fusion is a collection specialising in post-1940s international art and consisting of some 50,000 documents in different formats. These collections are constantly being brought up to date with new acquisitions while also being enhanced through the MACBA's contacts with museums and galleries around the world.
The Library collections are presented in different formats, and of them the following stand out:
• Monographs. The Library's collection consists of 45,000 books which include essays, cultural studies, exhibition catalogues and reference works.
• Periodical publications. The periodical publications collection offers more than 500 specialist reviews of international circulation, both recent and historical, for consultation; MACBA-produced and alternative publications complete this collection. Moreover, work is now being done to enable consultation of a digital database consisting of press clippings on matters related with the MACBA and areas of the Library's specialisation.
• Videos. The audiovisual collection (presently consisting of over 2,500 items) includes MACBA-produced and documentary videos concerned with artists and contemporary art, along with an audiovisual archive of MACBA exhibitions and activities, which in itself constitutes a major contemporary art and culture collection.
